  • fourth quarter and New York clin

NEW YORK, N. Custom San Francisco 49ers Jerseys .Y. - A chance to gain ground in the playoff race was there, until Jarrett Jack took it away. Now the New York Knicks have 3,000 miles to think about how this game — and maybe any realistic post-season hopes they had — was lost. Jack scored a season-high 31 points Sunday night in the Cleveland Cavaliers 106-100 victory over the Knicks, who had their eight-game winning streak snapped. The Knicks wasted a chance to pull within two games of a playoff spot before leaving for a five-game Western Conference trip that starts Tuesday against the Lakers. "This was a huge opportunity lost, one we cant afford," Knicks guard J.R. Smith said. "But we cant get it back. Weve just got to go on the road, win some games and try to come back home and win." Hours after being handed a chance to get closer to the final spot in the Eastern Conference when Atlanta blew a fourth-quarter lead in Toronto, the Knicks responded with an inept final period of their own after they led by 17 points in the first half. They couldnt stop Jack and couldnt get a basket from Carmelo Anthony, who missed all five shots in the final period and finished with 32 points. New York remained three back with 12 to play. "Its tough. We shouldve won this game. We gave it away. They earned it, they beat us. We didnt play well coming down the stretch or in the second half and they did," Anthony said. "But its behind us now, theres nothing we can do about that." Jack scored 23 in the second half after coach Mike Brown challenged his team at halftime. "It was just about making a stand and each individual person making a stand and then collectively as a team us all bringing that same mindset to the table," Jack said. "Thats pretty much what it was about. I just thought guys responded." Jack finished with 10 assists for the Cavaliers, who snapped a four-game losing streak. Dion Waiters scored 22 points and Luol Deng had 13 in his return from a three-game absence with a sprained left ankle for the Cavs, who didnt miss All-Star Kyrie Irving because Jack torched the Knicks for 13 points in the fourth quarter on 6-of-7 shooting. "I just challenged them. Thats all. I didnt say that much," Brown said. "The guys in the locker room, they decided to go play and they went out and got it done." New York was missing ailing Iman Shumpert, their best perimeter defender who surely wouldve gotten a chance to defend Jack since nobody else could. The Knicks, who suddenly were back in the playoff race after looking out of it after a seven-game skid dropped them to 21-40 after a loss in Detroit on March 3, will have to bounce back on the road. The Hawks had already lost at Toronto by the time the Knicks showed up for work Sunday. Coach Mike Woodson said he was glad but didnt appear overjoyed, realizing the Knicks still have plenty to do to get to the 35 to 40 wins he think will be necessary to earn a playoff spot. "Its good that they lose, but again, its about what we do at this point," Woodson said before the game. Even getting to 35 wins will be difficult considering they still have games against Miami and Chicago, plus two apiece against Brooklyn and Toronto after their trip. New York made 15 of 21 shots (71 per cent) in the first quarter, getting 14 points from Anthony and taking a 34-27 lead when Smith made a 28-footer with 0.2 seconds left. The Knicks pushed the lead to 17 in the second when Pablo Prigioni made a 3-pointer, then stole the ball and threw an alley-oop pass that Smith slammed down to finish off a fast break and make it 51-34. But down 61-46 at halftime, Cleveland scored the first nine of the second half to get within six, and the Knicks never really got the momentum back. The Cavs used an 11-4 spurt to tie it at 90 on Jacks jumper with 7:29 remaining, then Dengs 3-pointer gave them a 93-92 edge with 5:46 to play. Anthonys free throws gave the Knicks their last lead, but Jack knocked down a jumper, Waiters made a 3-pointer and Anderson Varejao had an easy dunk after a pick-and-roll to make it 100-94 with 2:37 remaining. New York cut it to two, but Jack answered with another jumper, finishing two points shy of his career high. Smith finished with 18 points. NOTES: New York had won the previous five meetings at home. ... On Noche Latina, Spanish for Latin night, former St. Johns star Felipe Lopez announced the starting lineups in Spanish. Terrell Thomas returned an interception 65 yards to set up a go-ahead 1-yard touchdown run by Andre Brown, and the New York Giants won their third straight game, 24-20 Sunday over Oakland. It was appropriate that Thomas and Brown combined to maintain the Giants hopes of overcoming an 0-6 start. Thomas missed the past two seasons with major knee injuries. Brown missed the first eight games this season after breaking his left leg in the last preseason game for the second time in nine months. "When I scored off his interception return, I went back over there and I said: Good job" said Brown, who ran for 115 yards on 30 carries. "Hes another guy that showed perseverance. He knows how to deal with adversity. Guys like that, you feed off of. I want to make sure Im a guy that they can feed off me." The error-prone Giants (3-6) did. They also fed off their defence, which limited a banged up Terrelle Pryor and the Raiders to 213 yards in total offence. Even more importantly they forced Oakland (3-6) to settle for a field goal on the opening possession of the second half after getting a first-and-goal at the 1. Instead of a 24-14 lead, the margin was 20-14. "That was huge," middle linebacker Jon Beason said. "Anytime you can go out there with your backs against the wall, its a good thing." Thomas interception was even bigger, and it turned the momentum a final time. After a three-and-out by New York, Oakland got the ball back at the New York 48 following a 27-yard punt by Steve Weatherford into a stiff breeze. On a third-and-9 from the 33, Pryor tried to hit Denarius Moore on a slant. Thomas, who was the NFC defensive player of the week two weeks ago, was waiting in the slant route. "It was a route they have run a lot and I was waiting on it the whole game," Thomas said. "They run two-by-two slants and coach put us in a great position and I was happy to make a play for the defence." Thomas ran toward the gaping end zone, avoiding a tackle by Pryor inside the 20 before being tackled by Andre Holmes. The ball came loose, and officials said Thomas was down. Brown gave the Giants the lead from the 1-yard line following a pass interference call, taking time to kneel in the end zonee and stretch his hands to the sky. Jimmie Ward 49ers Jersey. "Its great to have Dre back," Thomas said. "To run for 100 yards after sitting out and missing eight games and to come back in the fashion he did, and run like he did, its very refreshing for our team. It was great to see him return to his old self. I wish I would have scored but it was great to see him get in." Despite throwing another pick-6, Eli Manning threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Rueben Randle, and Cooper Taylor scored on a 21-yard return with a blocked punt. Josh Brown added a field goal. Pryor scored on a 1-yard run and Tracy Porter on a 43-yard interception return for Oakland. Sebastian Janikowski kicked two field goals. "We just to go back to work and stick with each other," said Pryor, who was 11 of 26 for 122 yards playing with a sore hamstring. "A lot of fingers can be pointed at me. Thats all right, I understand that. The next time we get in this situation we have to know how to react." Coming off a 49-20 loss to the Eagles, the Raiders were in a position to win this game. Porters interception return put them ahead 17-14 at the half and Janikowskis 24-yard field goal that capped an eight-minute drive stretched the lead to 20-14. But Thomas and Brown stepped in to save New York. Josh Brown added a 23-yard field goal in the fourth quarter and New York clinched the game when Mathias Kiwanuka had a sack-forced fumble on Oaklands final possession. Pryor scored from 1 yard on the second play from scrimmage after a fumble by Jerrel Jernigan on the opening kickoff. New York, which had given up special teams touchdowns in the two previous games got one back. Damontre Moore blocked Marquette Kings punt and Taylor scored. Oakland took a 10-7 lead on a 33-yard field goal by Janikowski. A fumble by running back Peyton Hillis on a short pass set up the score. Manning got the Giants going in the second quarter with a TD pass to Randle. However, Mannings third pick-6 of the season allowed Porter to skip into the end zone. NOTES: The previous time the Giants returned a blocked punt for a TD was by Tom Flynn in 1988. ...Weatherford had a miserable day, averaging 30.4 yards on four punts. Linebacker Sio Moore had nine tackles and a sack to lead Oakland. Safety Antrel Rolle had a game-high 12 tackles and a sack, one of four by New York.
